Technique…Time…Travel… / by Emma Fitzgerald-Lombard

One sunny, dry Sunday in February I went for a walking in Kensington Gardens. There is always so much to see, runners, cyclists, dogs, flower, fountains, the palace and sculptures.  It a place I return to regularly to experiment with different photography techniques.

There were two similar techniques I had read about which I wanted to experiment with, one being Intentional Camera Movement (ICM).  Moving the camera during the exposure time either horizontally or vertically. This produces a soft, blurred image.  I like how the colours mix as if they were paint on a canvas reminiscent of the quality of photorealism paintings.  The intense colour is eye catching and the feeling of traveling through time.   The image has this feeling of infinity, all which adds to the interest of the composition.

The other technique you zoom in during the exposure time, which creates this tunnel affect with a central point of stillness.  I like the movement and ghostly affect of figure walking through the frame.  This technique adds drama.

I frequently return to subject matter of Peter Pan.  Seeing the world from a child perspective or the playfulness themes running through my work.  Revisiting Peter Pan Sculpture reminds me of journey of life.  These experiments have culminating in the photograph, Untitled – The Amazing Adventures of Peter Pan (February 2019].
